Can I use Gemini 2.5. pro inside Firebase Studio without an API key?

Just a few minutes ago I tried for the first time Firebase Studio.

I saw that Gemini is integrated inside the editor, but if I try to change the model from “built-in” to “Gemini 2.5 Pro” I need to create and insert an API key.

I never did that and from my understanding it comes with a cost/it’s not free, so I was wondering if there is any way to use the normal Gemini that I’ve always used inside the editor.

(Just to be clear, with “normal Gemini” I mean the Gemini you find searching on Google)

Maybe it’s a stupid question but I’m new here so any clarification would be appreciated.

 Great news! Gemini 2.5 Pro is now the default model for Gemini in Firebase. API Key no longer needed. Read: Get the most out of Firebase Studio’s default built-in model, Gemini 2.5 Pro

Thanks James that’s good news! I was confused about it
