I understand your frustration with consistently encountering the [500 Internal Server Error] when interacting with the Gemini API. It’s definitely not ideal when you’re trying to work on projects.
Based on the error message [500 Internal Server Error] An internal error has occurred. and the fact that you’ve been seeing it for a couple of days, this error is almost certainly on the Google API’s side, not yours.
Here’s why and what you should do:

  • 500 Internal Server Error: This specific HTTP status code indicates that the server encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request. It means the issue is within the server’s infrastructure or code, not a problem with your request format, authentication, or token count (though you mentioned a previous token count error, this one is different).
  • Persistence: The fact that it has persisted for two days, and you’ve tried common client-side troubleshooting like clearing chat history, further confirms it’s a server-side issue.
  • Previous Token Error: Your previous “token count exceeded” error was a client-side error (you sent too much data). This current “500 Internal Server Error” is a server-side problem.
    What you should do:
  • Report the Issue (Crucial):
The error message itself directs you to “report in Troubleshooting guide | Gemini API | Google AI for Developers”. This is the most effective way to bring it to Google’s attention.
    • How to report: Go to the troubleshooting guide page. You’ll likely find a section on reporting issues or a link to a support forum/issue tracker. Provide as much detail as possible:
      • The exact error message you’re seeing.
      • The date and approximate times you started encountering the error.
      • Any specific context (e.g., if it happens with all prompts, or only certain types/lengths).
      • That you’ve tried clearing chat history and it persists.
  • Monitor Google Cloud Status Dashboard:
Google provides status dashboards for its services. While this might be for a preview model, it’s worth checking the broader Google Cloud status. Look for any ongoing incidents related to AI/ML services or Generative AI.
    • Google Cloud Status Dashboard
  • Try Again Periodically:
While you’ve been doing this, continue to try again periodically. Sometimes these internal errors are transient and resolve themselves as engineering teams address them.
  • Consider Using a Different Model (Temporary Workaround):
If your project allows for it, and you’re using a specific model like gemini-2.5-pro-preview-03-25, you might try:
    • A stable model: If available, try using a stable, generally available (GA) model instead of a preview model, as preview models can sometimes be more prone to instability.
    • A different preview model (if one exists): If there’s another preview version, you could see if that one works.
      Why you’re getting it:
“500 Internal Server Error” means something went wrong on Google’s end. This could be due to:
  • A temporary server overload.
  • A bug in the model or the serving infrastructure.
  • Ongoing maintenance or updates that caused a disruption.
  • Resource exhaustion on their end for the specific model you’re trying to access.
Unfortunately, there’s no “fix” you can implement on your side for a 500 error. Your main course of action is to report it and wait for Google to resolve the underlying issue.

the issues keep piling on, and yet, not a peep or word, let alone any resolutions from the source. this is untenable and shameful. it’s been months now, not days, that people with enough patience have been showing up here making noise. check the status dashboards? everything is always GREEN on their end. completely unreliable.

Hi @t_rec - sorry about the slow pace of responses. The dashboard is used for widespread issues, and this particular issue is one that (while frustrating) is only happening in a small number of workspaces.

Just out of curiosity, if you create a new project, does the prototyper work without throwing an error?

Cheers,
Kirupa

it doesnt happen in other workspaces but the workspace its occurring on happens to be a very important project i have been working on over the past 3 weeks , please sort this issue out at the earliest

@kirupa could you please look into this , have been having the same issue for 3 days now

@kirupa other projects are also having the same issue now

I have the Same issue

if you find any solution , please mention , thanks

I just received the same message now after working just fine one hour ago.
Don’t know if its the case @kirupa but I upgraded to Gemini Pro yesterday. Hope that’s not I got from upgrading…

The same here. Still not working.
Already sent a feedback at https://aistudio.google.com/
Tried to create a new API Key and changed at Fire Studio settings, but also didn’t work
Also tried changening from built-in model to Gemini API KEY and nothing… :frowning:

I also got this error an hour ago. Despite everything including quota usage check and changing API Keys etc I am now sure the problem is with Firebase not my side. I hope they fix it soon. Also gemini of that version stopped working to on my account

Another victim  been getting this error for last 1 hour now. Have tried restarting , /clear etc. Nothing works.

been facing this issue for the past 1 hour, pls anyone with the fix yet. this seems to be a new issue.

Please what did u do, mine has been acting up for the past 1 hour. a reply would be appreciated. thanks
