Hi, I’ve been enjoying Project IDX for quite awhile now, and I understand you’ve just released it to the public as Firebase Studio. But now it is extremely slow. It is barely usable, and that is only with the hope of improvement. For example, just a code completion now - which previously would have taken less than a second is taking multiple seconds. Just hitting up arrow in the integrated terminal takes about a second to show the previous history entry.
Is this just an increased load because of the popularity, an issue with a new Gemini/other integration, or is this the new normal for the free version? And are you already aware of this issue?
Hi @ibgib, I think it is due to a problem in the migration to Firebase Studio. In my personal case, I only had to delete the existing project in idx and import it again from GitHub to Firebase Studio and it worked correctly and as smoothly as always.
Ah interesting! Thank you for sharing that with me. Unfortunately my project is not that simple. It is a monorepo with multiple libs and apps with 100K+ LoC. And it is STRONGLY my belief that, after being literally the greatest software - and software monopoly - for the past 20 years, git has too much technical debt going forward when considering AI-generated code. So I don’t use git, and I can’t talk about what I do use because it will be regarded as spam. Suffice to say, it takes quite awhile with IDX’s interface to re-populate the project.
Well, it’s been 8 days with no word on this and no progress on the issue. Any chance there is about to be a new release that fixes this? It’s unusable now in the afternoons for me personally (Central Time, US) and I have to wait until the following morning. It’s not really tenable going forward.
Ty @kirupa for the fix. I have been using it throughout the day, including just now (it’s about 3 PM CST/8PM GMT). Previously it would consistently be taking multiple seconds on just an up arrow on the integrated terminal and now it’s performance is great. So thanks again for the help!
Glad to hear, @ibgib! If you want to join a private testing group where you can try out our latest improvements, please DM me the email address you are using to access Firebase Studio. I can get you added to it quickly
Hi! I was trying to find a solution for my project being so slow, and I stumbled on your comment, @kirupa. I was wondering whether there was a way I could also join this testing group? If so, the email I primarily use for accessing Firebase Studio is xdestinoo (at) gmail.com.
This is terrible, you can’t build anything with this. Loading from Git, forget it, use other AI assisted IDE like cursor, For days, been trying to just get going, but nope, times, out and never seems to load. Refreshing browser is like saying “switch off your machine and turn it back on”. Cmon.

Same problem. Using Firebase Studio, the last two days it got extremely slow, i need to reset the VR server every few interactions because it completely hangs. The writing of the LLM slows down to the point of freezing. With large files, it directly hangs. Speculative it seems that there is a lack of server resources for the growing demand. The enormous context that the chat accumulates (which cannot be reset) also doesn’t seem to help.
same problem studio-3649076518 and I have 1G line on Edge.
Have upgraded to paid plan but performance is still poor and I have invested a lot of time getting this far.
My machine recently had a popup “Disconnecting, reconnect now?” and I clicked that. I have not been able to open the environment again since that and I’m stuck with a constant “Setting up workspace” view now. Another one of my projects is up and available but the one I reconnected to will not connect
