Firebase studio frequently wants me to reload the IDX

hi all

I am not sure if others are facing this issue or if this is a known issue. I searched and couldn’t find an answer and whether this is unique to me. If i am continuously working in the Firebase studio IDX all is well. But if I am away from my computer for say even 10 minutes, the IDX decides that it needs to be reloaded. And occasionally I would have to restart the VM as well.

This is a bit painful as I have to wait for the entire workspace and environment setup to be completed. Anyone face this issue and have a solution?

Interested in why this is happening. Can you share your workspace id so we can dig into this more please?

When your computer goes to sleep the web browser’s socket connect could be broken between the browser and the VM. You will see a message to refresh the page to re-establish that socket connection. This can also happen if the Firebase Studio browser tab goes in the background for a long time and Chrome optimizes resources by unloading un-used tabs.

The other issue with restarting the VM shouldn’t happen unless the time is much longer than 10 minutes and the VM has turned down due to inactivity. When this happens you will need to wait for the VM to boot up again.

Could these scenarios I’m describing be what you are experiencing?

My workspace id is “zoofi-mvp-backend-11805177”. fwiw it happens to all the workspaces i have. At present I am unable to even open this workspace possibly due to ongoing service disruption

Yes. What you describe about the browser socket connection broken could be the case as chrome does optimize my browser tabs when sleeping. That said, the message pops up to reload the window and clicking on the reload doesn’t do much. I have to hard refresh the page.

The VM reloading doesn’t happen often. So that is not a major issue

This problem still persists. But it doesn’t seem to be a problem with the tab staying in the background or chrome putting the tab to sleep. Because even when I’m actively working on the project, it suddenly asks me to refresh the tab.

I assumed that this would happen when there was an update, but it’s really annoying. It makes me refresh the tab while I’m working on something, and when this error occurs, we can’t continue the conversation with Gemini CLI when we refresh the tab. At the most critical moment, the whole conversation is garbage.

It will be very good if this problem is fixed.

I also seem to be experiencing the same issue. After 10/15 minutes a message saying “Disconnected” shows up. I refresh the page and then the project sticks at the “Setting up workspace” stage and doesn’t go any further. Restarting the VM does not help. Eventually it will work again, but you then hit the same problem. It is very annoying as I can’t reliably work on any projects.
